Salt Lake City Marathon 2007

Saturday was the SLC Marathon. No, we did not run in it, but seeing all those other people doing it really makes it look fun. We did, however, go out and show our support through cheers and water!

Scott gets so excited about the marathon. Last year he set up a water table because the runners go right past our house. It was a lot of fun to cheer them on and offer water. This year was the same, except we were more prepared. We bought cups at Costco (used 800) and borrowed four water jugs and a table. At 5am they were out setting up the mile markers and cones in front of our house. Shortly after that Scott was out setting up his "unofficial" water table. He watched the bikers go by and then the wheel chairs and then I joined him. We got to see the Nigerian elite runners and then came the masses of runners.

The runners have to come up quite a hill and then they turn the corner on to our street and are SOOOOO grateful to see water. Most were very grateful for the support and the water. There was only one exception. One lady said to Scott, "You should be handing these cups out!!" Scott was so shocked he didn't know what to say. Hey, we're doing this out of the kindness of our hearts lady! We could still be in bed!

It was a fun morning of cheering the runners and helping them make it past Mile 9. The coolest part was that all the neighbors started joining us and then . . . . get this . . . . a Mariachi band showed up! Can you believe it? They stood behind our table and played and sang all morning. What a party!

Looks like a really fun day for you, not necessarily the runners. What a great and kind idea, Scott. Where are they running? I don't remember sidewalk and rocks in front of your house. Brielle looks like she enjoyed it, too.

Thanks for supporting the runners, I feel the support extending to us in a few days! Mile 9 is a great place for it to look like fun. Next time you should see the race at mile 22, where it does NOT look like fun. I still hold to my initial judgement -- a half marathon looks like fun, a marathon looks like pain. --R

Great idea guys. The tradition is a million times better with the mariachi band. Hopefully they keep coming. And maybe next year you can add a bounce-house or something for the kids.

How cool. Did you see Kim? I think she ran it. Was the lady meaning you should be handing the cups out instead of just setting them on the table?? Crazy. Ccongratulations on a good deed.

I love the picture of Brielle in her little track suit! She looks ready to join all the other runners out there.
