I always get excited for the Fourth of July. It is one of my favorite holidays for sure - the friends, the family, the BBQ, the fireworks, the parades, the colors and the no stress of presents. Love it. We were all amped up for this 4th of July just like we always are. We started with a bike parade with our playgroup friends just a few days before. You should know, this was a little ambitious of us. It was wicked hot (heat wave) and we were just getting over a month of someone in our house being sick and puking. We just had to join in though. It was a good decision. It was one fun bike parade.
Kate and her friend, Lydia, all dressed up in their red, white and blue.
All the kids got to work on their bikes and scooters. We had flags, leis, crepe paper, banners. They were looking fancy.Riding around a quiet neighborhood. They didn't mind that no one even knew there was a real, live parade going on.
The morning of Fourth of July came with the same excitement. I went out on a run early in the morning, while Scott bathed and dressed the kids in their patriotic colors so that we could go to the parades, etc. I was finishing up, when Scott pulled up to me on the street in the mini van with all the kids in the car. He said he was in the bathroom and tried to close the door, but it felt stuck or maybe swollen so he pushed harder. Kate's baby finger was in the door. She cried and cried. He bandaged it up and felt horrible. Kate wasn't crying anymore, but was still sad. I took her out of her car seat and held her close while I walked the rest of the way home.
We decided to go to Urgent Care. Never a good idea. We took all the kids there, instead of any 4th of July parade, just to be told to take her to Primay Children's so that they could sedate her a little and reattach the nail to the nail bed.
Lucky for us and the kids, we got a hold of Landon and Sarah and they were able to add our kids to their mix for their street parade and party. I was happy the kids got to join in the festivities and that we didn't have to manage them in the hospital.
At the hospital, they checked out Kate's finger, explained what they needed to do and then had her sniff something that made her act drunk. It was kind of funny to see how out of it she was.
Scott entertained her with blow up medical gloves and the iPad.
Eventually, the doctor, a nurse and an assistant held her down while she screamed and the doctor quickly fixed her finger and bandaged it. It only took a couple of minutes, but it felt far too long to me. I just held her face and talked to her. Scott held her also. It was so sad for us.
After we picked the kids up from all of their fun and took Kate home for a nap and some time at home, we met up with Brian and Rachel and family for dinner and to see their winning float from the morning's Millcreek parade. Kate's looking happy, right? And then fireworks at Sugarhouse Park with Landon and Sarah and kids.
In the end, we did get to join in the celebrating of 4th of July and Kate was all better and feeling fine. So grateful.
